City Signs of Dundee - Materials supply & cutting service

We can supply individuals or trade customers with the general materials which we stock on a regular basis.

Self Adhesive Vinyl: A highly stable PVC which is the primary material used by signmakers to produce almost all lettering or designs. We use high quality products with a lifespan to suit the end use. Most signs & vehicle liveries are produced in either 5-7year or 7-9year grades. We hold a substantial stock in most colours at 1220/1260mm widths, and lengths of up to 50m. Speciality films such as reflective grades are normally available next day at appropriate widths & lengths. 3M, Ritrama, MACtac, Oracal and Avery are just some of the top end suppliers we use.

Foamed PVC sheet: A medium density PVC sheet. 2,3,4,5,6,& 10mm in white & a limited colour range.

Known as 'foamex', 'simocell', this is the general purpose material commonly used by signmakers where the client requires a lightweight or budget sign as this is much cheaper and lighter than the older / traditional 'Perspex' acrylic sheet. It's downside is a high expansion coefficient in warmer weather & its low impact resistance.

Acrylic sheet: A high density plastic. Available in most thicknesses, (2 - 25mm) and a large colour range.

Often known by the tradenames 'Perspex', 'Plexiglass', this is the traditional material used by signmakers where the client requires a long life or higher quality sign as this is more expensive and more stable than the PVC above. It's downside is its impact resistance and the resulting cracking / shattering. Where stones are likely to be thrown this is rarely a recommended material. Available in 'cast' or 'extruded' forms. The clear sheets make good temporary glazing, and the 'opal white' is used to face lightboxes.

Aluminium Composite: A plastic core between two thin sheets of aluminium make this material very a strong, lightweight and incredible versatile & durable signage & fabrication medium. With the life of aluminium and the versatility of plastic it has opened up new territory for mid-priced yet high quality signage. Trade names include 'Di-Bond, Reno-bond, Alu-core'.

Polycarbonate sheet: A highly impact resistant plastic. Available in most thicknesses, (1 - 25mm) in clear.

Often known by the tradename 'Lexan' and sometimes (incorrectly) as bullet-proof, this is the material used by signmakers where the client requires a long life or higher quality sign with a very high impact resistance as it is virtually unbreakable.  Where stones or vandalism are likely this is a recommended material. The clear sheets make good temporary glazing, and the 'opal white' is used to face lightboxes.

Aluminium sheet: A lightweight metal sheet in 2 or 3mm.

Used for highly rigid & damage resistant signage the world over, it comes either as a natural finish or white painted. Can be coated to any colour or sprayed / powder coated to a specific BS shade. High quality & durability at nearly the same cost as acrylic.

Please note: In the case of many materials, a 'standard sized' sheet may be the minimum order.
